Old Vine Zinfandel’s viticultural legacy in the Russian River Valley dates back to the late 19th century, when Italian immigrants settled there and planted Zinfandel. In 1916 one of these immigrants, Benito Montafi, planted a Zinfandel-based “field blend” in the high plains of the Piner-Olivet district, which has a long history of producing compelling old vine Zinfandels. For us, having produced Zinfandel for many years from the adjacent Vera Gold Vineyard, we were ecstatic when the opportunity arose to purchase Montafi in 2014.

Tasting Notes
With tannin-driven textural richness, this elegant “old vine” Zinfandel boasts notes of briary black fruit, toasted brioche, and subtle, site-specific hints of eucalyptus, adding complexity and regional distinctiveness.
Food Pairing Notes
Smoked ribs, grilled sausages and rib-eye steak. Cassoulet with duck confit, rich meaty pastas like Bolognese. Aged goat cheeses like Gouda.

Russian River Valley’s Piner-Olivet district

The overall cooler temperature, courtesy of marine influenced air that flows up the Petaluma Gap from the south and up the Russian River from the west, creates significant diurnal swings, up to 55°F. This phenomenon prolongs hang time, which allows for a steady accumulation of ripe fruit flavors, aromatic intensity and phenolic (tannin) ripeness.
