Seghesio Family Vineyards

cellar selections

After each release of a new vintage, we set aside a few cases – for our own research into the effects of winemaking variables over time, and to be able to delight customers who seek more bottle age for peak drinkability. These treasured wines aged in ideal cellar conditions are called “Cellar Selections,” and below are a few we have made available for online ordering. If you would like assistance placing your order, or are interested in discovering more limited offerings from our cellar, please contact us at or 707-260-0936.

2013 Barbera Image
94pts - the tasting panel + seal of excellence
91pts - Wine Enthusiast

Edoardo Seghesio immigrated to America from the Piedmont region of Italy, home to Barbera. In 1895, he planted his first vineyards to grapes he had come to enjoy in his new country, yet one vineyard was saved for varietals from his homeland. Our historic, proprietary Barbera clones benefit from the warm, dry days in northern Alexander Valley, where the grape’s classic acidity creates a wine with vibrant aromas and a velvety texture. This wine is 100% Barbera from our Estate Home Ranch in Alexander Valley.

2013 Burnside Pinot Noir Image

The Burnside Road Vineyard in Russian River Valley is a cool, marine-influenced site with undulating slopes that are often fog-covered in the mornings and late afternoons. Farmed by the Martinelli family, who have grown grapes in Sonoma County since the 1880’s, Burnside features the Russian River’s prized Goldridge soils, a sandy loam that is particularly well draining. Our grapes come from a northeastern-facing slope; a cool spot where the Pinot Noir ripens at a gradual pace.

2011 Cortina Zinfandel Image

In the early 1900s, Seghesio Family Vineyards began purchasing fruit from growers in Dry Creek Valley in recognition of the area’s great potential for Zinfandel. Our Dry Creek Valley appellation Zinfandel is sourced from some of the valley’s best benchland sites as well as from the estate-farmed Cortina vineyard, named for the dominant soil type of this area. Cortina is a gravelly loam that contributes to Dry Creek Valley’s reputation as one of the finest places in the world to grow Zinfandel.

2012 Monte Rosso Zinfandel Image
92pts - Wine Advocate
91pts - Wine Spectator

Planted in the 1880s, Monte Rosso — Italian for “red mountain” — is rooted in the iron-rich, volcanic soils of the Mayacamas Mountains 1,000 feet above Sonoma Valley on the western facing ridgeline. Atop the ridge, there is a constant breeze that often whips into a strong wind, accentuating the cool climate of Sonoma Valley. This venerable site’s head-pruned vines are renowned for their intensely flavored, complex Zinfandel.

2011 Old Vine Carignane Image

Carignane is one of the world’s most widely planted varietals, prominent in Southern France, the United States, Israel, Northern Africa and many former Soviet countries. It is one of the wine industry’s favorite blending wines and a staple in our old vine plantings of Zinfandel. Like most grape varieties, Carignane vines evolve into something very special at about 50 years of age. This wine displays the character and complexity inherent in mature vineyards.

2012 Sangiovese Image

Edoardo Seghesio first worked with Sangiovese in the late 1800s during his tenure as winemaker at Italian Swiss Colony. In 1910, he planted a Chianti field blend surrounding the railroad station in what was then Chianti, Calif. Those Sangiovese plantings on our Home Ranch are the oldest in America and provided the rich source of four unique clones for our subsequent plantings of the varietal. This wine is 100% Sangiovese from our Estate Home Ranch and Rattlesnake Hill in Alexander Valley.
