2015 Montafi Zinfandel
2015 Montafi Zinfandel
95 POINTS - Robert Parker Wine Advocate

Old Vine Zinfandel’s viticultural legacy in the Russian River Valley dates back to the late 19th century, when Italian immigrants settled there and planted Zinfandel. In 1916 one of these immigrants, Benito Montafi, planted a Zinfandel-based “field blend” in the high plains of the Piner-Olivet district, which has a long history of producing compelling old vine Zinfandels. For us, having produced Zinfandel for may years from the adjacent Vera Gold Vineyard we were ecstatic when the opportunity arose to purchase Montafi in 2014.

Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
Bright acidity accentuates the earth tones, floral notes and a briary raspberry/cherry essence. Underlying “old vine” tannin-driven textural richness. A site-specific hint of eucalyptus from the neighboring trees adds complexity and regional distinctiveness.

Russian River Valley’s Piner-Olivet district

The overall cooler temperature, courtesy of marine influenced air that flows up the Petaluma Gap from the south and up the Russian River from the west, creates significant diurnal swings, up to 55°F. This phenomenon prolongs hang time, which allows for a steady accumulation of ripe fruit flavors, aromatic intensity and phenolic (tannin) ripeness.
