Seghesio Family Vineyards

2017 Home Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel
2017 Home Ranch Old Vine Zinfandel

In 1895 newlyweds Edoardo and Angela Seghesio purchased their first home in the western benchland of Alexander Valley. Sensing the land had great vineyard potential, Edoardo planted a field blend of Zinfandel, and thus began our family's legacy as vintners in Sonoma County. This site-specific Zinfandel comes from blocks 2 through 7, representing some of Home Ranch's most exceptional and oldest vines from Edoardo's original planting.

Tasting Notes
Brambly notes of blackberry and raspberry are lifted by the bright scent of lilac and violets on the nose. On the palate, the wine is velvety with notes of juicy red fruit, crème brûlée and a hint of spice on the lengthy finish. A big, bold wine like this needs big, bold food – think New York steaks and rib-eyes. The Tomahawk chop would be perfect. Dress up the pairing with blue cheese butter and a decadent potato gratin.

Long, warm days aided by the absence of marine influence marks this site. The soils are composed of clay and clay loam with underlying layers of basalt, sandstone and volcanic rock. Vines are challenged by the low nutrient level of the clay and the shallow topsoil, which both force them to produce more concentrated fruit.
